Equinox Tarot Spread: Spring and Autumn Reading Guide

What is the equinox and why get a tarot reading

The equinox — spring around March 20 and autumn around September 22 — marks the moment when day and night are equal in length. In practical tarot terms, it is a balance point that invites stock-taking: what begins, what closes, what continues. Unlike a solstice spread, which works with extremes of maximum light or darkness, the equinox spread works with the midpoint, revision and redistribution of energy.

The 4 positions of the equinox spread

Position 1: what is currently in balance in your life. Position 2: what you need to initiate or reinforce in the cycle that begins. Position 3: what you need to release or reduce to restore balance. Position 4: the resource or energy available to you for this new cycle. You can add a fifth card as a synthesis or central counsel if you want a more complete and action-oriented reading.

Spring equinox: what to ask the cards

The spring equinox is the highest-energy cycle-opening moment of the year. The most useful questions for this moment are: what project or intention deserves the energy of the cycle that begins, what have I been postponing that I can now start, and what pattern from the previous year do I need not to repeat. This is a good time to request a full Celtic Cross if the question is complex or involves an important decision.

Autumn equinox: what to ask the cards

The autumn equinox calls for introspection and harvest. The most useful questions are: what have I built this year that deserves recognition, what do I need to integrate before the lower-activity period arrives, and which relationship or situation has reached its natural closing point. This equinox is especially useful for compatibility spreads or relationship evaluations that have lasted several months.

How to read the card of what you leave behind

Position 3 in the equinox spread — what you release — is often the hardest to interpret. If a card that normally reads as positive appears there, such as the Nine of Pentacles or Three of Cups, do not read it as loss: tarot is telling you that even something good has reached its natural closing cycle. Releasing does not mean it was wrong, only that it has fulfilled its purpose and no longer needs your energy.
