Your tarot card of the year: how to calculate it

Year card vs. birth card: not the same thing

The birth card (or natal card) is calculated from your full birth date and never changes — it is your life archetype. The year card is calculated from your day and month of birth plus the current year, and it changes every year. They represent different things: the birth card tells you who you are; the year card tells you what energy you are entering this cycle.

How to calculate your tarot card of the year

Add your birth day plus your birth month plus the current year. Reduce the result until you get a number between 1 and 22. If you get 22, it corresponds to The Fool (0). Example: born on March 14. In 2026: 14 + 3 + 2026 = 2043, then 2+0+4+3 = 9, which is The Hermit. Your year energy is introspection, pause, and discernment. The calculation may vary slightly depending on the tradition, but the result is usually identical or off by one.

What the year card tells you

It is not a prediction of what will happen: it is the tone of the year. If your year card is The Tower (XVI), it is a year of abrupt change — not necessarily bad, but one of rupture with old structures. If it is The Star (XVII), it is a year of recovery and clarity after a difficult period. If it is The Sun (XIX), it is a year of expansion and visibility. You can work with that energy or ignore it — either way, you will feel it.

Pair your year card with a real reading

The year card marks the energy of the cycle. A Celtic Cross will tell you how it manifests in your specific situation.

When does your personal tarot year start?

There are two schools: some work with the calendar year (January 1st), others with the birthday. The difference is minor but conceptually relevant: if you work with the birthday, the personal year starts when you turn and ends the day before your next birthday. Most modern readers prefer the calendar year for simplicity, but the card is the same in both cases.

22 possible year archetypes

There are only 22 possible years in this system (Major Arcana 0 through XXI). That means the patterns repeat. If you have been tracking this for a few years and recognize your Hermit year or your Wheel of Fortune year, you already have a personal reference for how that energy manifested before in your life. That is more useful than any generic horoscope.
