Relationship synastry: what it is and what an astrological compatibility reading reveals

Synastry compares two natal charts to understand the real dynamics of a couple: what connects you, what creates tension and what karma you share. It is not sun sign compatibility.

Relationship synastry: what it is and what an astrological compatibility reading reveals

What synastry is and how it works

Synastry is the astrological technique that overlays two natal charts to analyze the dynamics of a relationship. Unlike sun-sign compatibility — which uses only each person's Sun — synastry considers all the planets: how one person's Venus aspects the other's Mars, how the lunar nodes cross, which house the partner's Sun activates in your chart. That overlay reveals patterns of attraction, conflict and shared karma.

What a synastry reading analyzes

The analysis studies the aspects between planets in both charts: Venus-Mars (physical and sexual attraction), Sun-Moon (emotional complementarity), Saturn-personal planets (lasting commitments and friction), Pluto-Venus or Pluto-Sun (intensity, transformation, power dynamics). It also examines which houses of your chart the other person activates: their Sun falling in your 7th house has a very different effect than it falling in your 12th.

Difference between sun-sign compatibility and synastry

Sun-sign compatibility uses only each person's Sun sign — the most superficial layer. Real synastry works with the complete chart: you might have a Sun in Aries and your partner a Sun in Cancer — theoretically incompatible — but their Moon in Aries and Mercury in Gemini create a genuine and lasting affinity. Sun signs are a starting point, not a conclusion.

What synastry reveals that horoscopes do not

Synastry identifies the relational patterns activated specifically with that person: whether there is a karmic pull marked by the lunar nodes, whether Saturn is generating a dynamic of obligation or restriction, or whether Venus-Jupiter aspects favor mutual support and shared growth. It also highlights areas of highest potential conflict and how they can be navigated.

When a synastry reading makes sense

A synastry reading is useful when you want to understand why a relationship works a certain way, before making major decisions together — moving in, commitment, separation — or to analyze past relationships and identify repeating patterns. It is also useful for non-romantic relationships: business partners, family relationships with significant emotional weight.
