Natal Chart Rectification: What to Do If You Don't Know Your Birth Time

What is natal chart rectification

Astrological rectification is the process by which an astrologer attempts to determine a person's birth time when that data is unknown, approximate or questionable. It is done by correlating important biographical events — moves, relationships, losses, professional achievements — with the transits and progressions that would have been active at each moment, adjusting the time until the chart fits real life.

Why the exact birth time matters so much in astrology

The birth time determines the Ascendant, the twelve angles of the chart and the distribution of all planets in the astrological houses. A four-minute difference changes the degree of the Ascendant; a two-hour difference can change the Ascendant sign entirely. Without the time, the most personal and precise level of the natal chart is lost: the houses, Midheaven and Ascendant.

When natal chart rectification is necessary

Rectification is necessary when the birth time is completely unknown, when the available record only says early morning or afternoon, or when there is suspicion the data is wrong because the calculated Ascendant does not match the personality or historical transits. It can also be useful when the calculated Ascendant is very close to a sign change.

Astrological rectification methods

The most commonly used methods are event-based rectification (correlating transits with key biographical dates), annual profections (the profected house should be relevant to the events of that year), and secondary progressions (progressed planets should activate in the marked years). The process requires a detailed biographical history and may take several iterations.

How to find your birth time if you don't have it

The most reliable sources are the family record book, the extended birth certificate, the hospital records where you were born, or direct memories from your parents. In some countries the birth time is recorded in the civil registry. If none of these options are available, you can work with a solar chart or a noon chart as an approximation.
