Mercury retrograde: what to do, what to avoid, and how to use it

What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury retrograde is an optical phenomenon: the planet does not literally move backward, but from Earth it appears to because its relative orbital speed changes. It happens about three times a year, for approximately three weeks each time. In astrology it is associated with difficulties in communication, contracts, travel, and technology, which are the areas Mercury rules. It is not a disaster sentence, but it is a period when these topics become more erratic and require more attention.

What to avoid during Mercury retrograde

There are decisions worth postponing if possible: signing new contracts, especially complex ones; launching new products or businesses; making important tech purchases without thorough review; starting difficult conversations in writing (text is misinterpreted more during this period); and making major life decisions based on information that may be incomplete. It is not that everything goes wrong, but the probability of needing revisions or corrections clearly increases.

What actually works well during Mercury retrograde

The key is the prefix re: review, revise, revisit, reconcile, rewrite. It is a good time to review already-signed contracts, pick up paused projects, re-read notes and reflect before acting, reconnect with people you lost touch with, and deepen knowledge of topics you already know. It is also excellent for editing and proofreading texts, conducting internal audits, or preparing strategies you will launch once Mercury is direct.

Mercury retrograde does not affect all signs equally

The impact of each Mercury retrograde depends on which sign it transits and how it affects the planets in your natal chart. If Mercury retrograde passes through your sun, moon, or rising sign, you will feel it more. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) tend to be more sensitive due to their relationship with Mercury and directional changes. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) notice it especially when Mercury moves back through their sign or the opposite.

The shadow period: before and after matter as much as the retrograde

The pre-shadow period (when Mercury enters the zone where it will go retrograde) and the post-shadow period (when it passes through that zone going direct again) are as important as the retrograde itself. In the pre-shadow the themes that will unfold during the retrograde begin to emerge. In the post-shadow those processes are finalized. The complete cycle can last six to seven weeks. That is why it is not enough to look only at the retrograde dates: it is worth checking the shadow entry and exit dates too.

Natal retrograde Mercury vs transiting Mercury retrograde

These are two different things that are sometimes confused. Natal Mercury retrograde is Mercury's position at the moment of your birth and describes your permanent mental style (more introverted and reflective). Transiting Mercury retrograde is a cyclical event that affects everyone at the same time, though with varying intensity depending on each person's natal chart. You can have direct natal Mercury and still feel the retrograde transit strongly, or vice versa.
