Why the sun sign does not determine compatibility

The sun sign occupies only one position in a chart that has more than forty factors. Two people with incompatible sun signs can have very compatible Moons, Risings or Venuses. And vice versa: two classically compatible signs can have deep tensions due to the aspects between their personal planets. The sun sign gives a clue, not a verdict.

Compatibility by element: fire, earth, air and water

The most stable compatibility occurs between signs of the same element or between complementary elements. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) stimulate each other mutually. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) share a practical and emotional orientation. Combinations of fire with water or earth with air usually involve more friction, though they are not impossible: they simply require more conscious work.

Opposition axes: attraction and tension

In astrology, opposite signs share the same axis and tend to attract each other strongly. Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-Sagittarius, Cancer-Capricorn, Leo-Aquarius and Virgo-Pisces are the six axes of the zodiac. The attraction is real because they complement each other, but the tension is also real because they represent opposing energies that must find balance. Many lasting relationships are born on these axes.

Squares: signs that generate more friction

Signs in square (at 90°) share the same modality but with an incompatible element, which generates the greatest potential for conflict. Aries clashes with Cancer and Capricorn. Taurus clashes with Leo and Aquarius. Gemini clashes with Virgo and Pisces. It does not mean they cannot have a relationship: it means there will be points of tension that require active negotiation and understanding.
