How Many Past Lives Do We Have? What Traditions Say

There is no single answer. Depending on which spiritual tradition you consult, the number of lives can be unlimited, determined by pending karma, or end when the soul reaches a certain state.

How Many Past Lives Do We Have? What Traditions Say

Is there a limit to how many lives the soul has?

The question of how many lives we have has no universal answer. Different spiritual traditions hold very different — sometimes contradictory — positions on whether the number of incarnations is finite or unlimited, and what determines when the cycle ends.

What Hinduism says

In the Hindu view, the soul (atman) passes through a potentially unlimited cycle of reincarnations (samsara) until it reaches liberation (moksha). The number of lives is not predetermined — it depends on accumulated karma. A soul may need hundreds or thousands of lives to resolve its karmic debts. In some Hindu traditions, the soul can also incarnate in non-human forms.

What Buddhism says

Buddhism does not describe a permanent soul that reincarnates but rather a stream of consciousness that continues. The concept is technically rebirth, not reincarnation. The goal is nirvana: the extinction of desire that fuels the cycle of rebirth. There is no fixed number of lives — the cycle lasts as long as it takes the mind to free itself from attachment.

Western esoteric view and hypnotic regression

In European spiritism and the Theosophical tradition, the soul evolves through lives as part of a progressive learning process. Past-life therapists like Michael Newton or Brian Weiss report that people in hypnotic states describe between-life periods where the soul plans its next incarnation. According to these accounts, the number of lives varies enormously — from a few dozen to several hundred.

Signs you have had many incarnations

Some people feel they have been incarnated many times: they have emotional maturity that does not match their biological age, they learn certain skills unusually fast, or feel a deep connection to specific historical periods. In the esoteric tradition they are called old souls. This is not better or worse than being a young soul — it simply implies a longer journey.

Are there simultaneous or parallel lives?

Some contemporary spiritual currents propose that time is not linear and that the soul can live several lives simultaneously across different planes or timelines. This idea has no basis in older traditions but has gained popularity in new age spirituality. In classical hypnotic regression, lives are typically described as sequential.
