The shape of the palm and the relative length of the fingers determine which interpretation system applies. The same marking on the life line reads differently in an earth hand versus an air hand. Knowing the type is the first step toward an accurate reading.

People with earth hands have a practical, sensible temperament oriented toward the tangible. They are hardworking, reliable and grounded. The air hand has a square palm with long fingers. It is the hand of thought, communication and analysis. People with air hands are intellectually active, curious and skilled with language. People with fire hands are natural leaders, positively impulsive and with a capacity to motivate others that few possess. Their challenge is patience and consistency in routine. Their lines tend to be few but very deeply marked, and the palm color is often more pink or reddish.

The water hand has a long palm with also long fingers. It is the most intuitive and emotional of the four types. People with water hands are highly sensitive, empathic and with a very rich inner life. They are also the most susceptible to environmental energetic influences. Their lines are numerous, fine and can change more over time than those of other types.

how to identify your hand type in a photo

To identify the type, observe: (1) the proportion between palm length and finger length, (2) whether the palm is square (width similar to height) or rectangular (clearly longer than wide). With those two data points you can classify the hand into one of four types. If you are unsure between earth and air, or fire and water, look at skin texture and number of lines: few and deep points to earth or fire; many and fine to air or water.
