The Four Angles of the Natal Chart: ASC, IC, DC and MC
ASC, IC, DC, and MC: the four angles are the most personal points of the natal chart. Learn what each means and how to read them together.
What are the four angles of the natal chart
The four angles are the most sensitive and personal points of any natal chart: the Ascendant (ASC), the Imum Coeli (IC), the Descendant (DC), and the Midheaven (MC). They form two perpendicular axes that divide the wheel into four quadrants. Unlike signs or houses, the angles are exact points calculated from the time and place of birth, making them unique to each individual. A planet in conjunction with any of the four angles has a significantly amplified effect in the chart.
The Ascendant (ASC): first impression and physical appearance
The Ascendant is the point of the zodiac that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the mask the world sees first: physical appearance, social behavior in new contexts, and the immediate way of presenting oneself. It also describes the overall life approach and how action is initiated. It is not the deep personality (that is the Sun), but how that personality manifests outward.
The IC (Imum Coeli): roots, home, and private life
The IC is the point opposite the Midheaven, at the base of the natal chart. It represents roots, the childhood home, the family of origin, private life, and the deepest security needs. The sign on the IC describes the emotional atmosphere of upbringing and what the native seeks in their adult home. Saturn in conjunction with the IC can indicate a restrictive childhood or a distant primary parental figure.
The Descendant (DC): partnership, contracts, and one-to-one relationships
The Descendant is the point opposite the Ascendant, on the western horizon. It rules committed relationships (romantic partners, business partners), contracts, and significant one-to-one connections. The sign of the Descendant describes what is unconsciously sought in a partner: what the native does not project of themselves but tends to attract. If the Ascendant is Aries, the Descendant is Libra: diplomatic and conciliatory people tend to be attracted.
The Midheaven (MC): career, reputation, and public purpose
The Midheaven is the highest point of the natal chart and represents public vocation, professional career, social standing, and reputation. It is what the world sees of you in the long run, in opposition to the IC (private life). Planets conjunct the MC amplify professional ambition and public visibility. The MC sign describes the career style and domain: MC in Aquarius points to innovative, technological, or humanitarian professions.

Get my birth chartHow to read the four angles together
The four angles are always read as two axes: the ASC-DC axis reveals how you define yourself versus how you relate to others; the IC-MC axis describes origin (home, family) versus destination (career, public legacy). When a slow transit from Saturn, Uranus, or Pluto touches any of the four angles, it marks a period of deep transformation in that life area. It is one of the most intense moments in any personal astrological cycle.
