Few images in the dream repertoire carry as much symbolic power as the snake. In almost every culture worldwide, the snake appears as a symbol of transformation, hidden wisdom, danger, sexuality, healing, or betrayal. In a dream, its meaning depends enormously on context: dreaming that a snake bites you is very different from dreaming that a snake accompanies you peacefully.
Dreaming of snakes that attack or bite you
If the snake bites or attacks you in the dream, the unconscious is processing a real or perceived threat in your life. It could be a person you do not trust, a situation that feels dangerous, or even a part of yourself that bites when you ignore it. The part of the body where the snake bites also matters: the hand speaks of action, the foot of progress, the heart of relationships, the back of possible betrayal.
Dreaming of many snakes
Dreaming of a group of snakes, a room full of them, or a nest amplifies the signal. It generally indicates multiple sources of accumulated tension, or that a problem has reached a magnitude the conscious mind can no longer ignore. It can also reflect sensory or emotional overstimulation in your current life.

The color of the snake adds layers of meaning. A black snake is often associated with the unknown or the Jungian shadow. A green snake points to growth, envy, or nature. Not all snake dreams are threatening. If the snake is calm, observes you without aggression, or even speaks to you, the symbol changes entirely. Jung associated the snake with the energy of the unconscious in its wisest form: the inner dragon that, tamed, becomes an ally. This type of dream tends to appear during periods of deep personal transformation.

In antiquity, Greek priests at Epidaurus interpreted snake dreams as healing signals sent by Asclepius, god of medicine. The caduceus, two snakes coiled around a staff, remains the symbol of Western medicine.
