Why dreaming about someone dying is rarely a premonition

What it means to dream about a family member dying
Dreaming of a parent dying can indicate you are going through an individuation process: you are psychologically separating from their influence. Dreaming that a sibling or child dies often reflects anxiety about that person well-being, fear of losing the bond, or processing an unresolved conflict. The dream context (was it violent? were you present? how did you feel?) is as important as the event itself.
What it means to dream your partner dies
This dream often appears during moments of change within the relationship: an important argument, the start of a new phase, or the fear of losing that person through separation, distance, or a shift in the dynamic. It is not statistically a dream that precedes breakups. Rather it is the unconscious registering of a transformation in the bond.
Dreaming that someone still alive dies
This subtype of dream is particularly distressing because the person is still alive when you wake. The most frequent interpretations: your relationship with that person is changing or ending in some way even if only in specific aspects; there is a real concern about their health or situation; or you are processing unexpressed emotional conflicts with that person.
The Jungian perspective: the death symbol in dreams
For Carl Jung, death in dreams is a symbol of transformation, not of ending. The death of a representative figure in the dream can indicate that a part of you related to that figure is changing. Dreaming your mother dies can coincide with a maturation process in which you are releasing dynamics of dependence or approval-seeking.
