Composite chart for couples: what it is and how it differs from synastry

What is a composite chart for couples

The composite chart is an astrological technique that generates a unique natal chart for the relationship, calculated by averaging the points of the two individual natal charts. If person A's Sun is at 10° Aries and person B's is at 20° Aries, the composite Sun falls at 15° Aries. Each composite planet represents how that energy expresses itself in the relationship as its own entity, not in each person separately. The result is a chart that describes the character, potential, and challenges of the relationship itself.

How the composite chart is calculated

The composite chart follows the midpoint method: the midpoint is taken between each pair of equivalent planets (A's Sun and B's Sun, A's Moon and B's Moon, etc.) and between the angles of both charts. For the composite ascendant, the midpoint of the RAMC of both births is calculated. It is a mathematical process that requires the exact birth data of both people: date, time, and place.

The difference between synastry and the composite chart

Synastry analyzes how the planets of one person affect the other: A's Venus conjunct B's Sun shows how they mutually activate each other. The composite chart, on the other hand, describes what kind of relationship they have created together: if the composite Sun is in the 7th house, the relationship has a markedly social and visible partnered character; if it is in the 12th house, the relationship is more intimate, internal, even private. They are used in parallel: synastry explains the dynamic between the two; the composite describes the relationship's destiny.

The Sun and Moon in the composite chart

The composite Sun indicates the central purpose of the relationship: where the couple as a unit wants to go. The composite Moon describes shared emotional needs and the tone of the home and daily life together. A composite Sun in Capricorn with Moon in Cancer, for example, creates a relationship oriented toward achievement and structure with a strong domestic core. Aspects between the composite Sun and Moon (especially conjunction, square, or opposition) shape much of the relationship's emotional character.

Planets on angles in the composite chart

Planets that fall on the angles of the composite chart (ascendant, IC, descendant, Midheaven) define the most visible character of the relationship. Saturn on the composite ascendant describes a serious, committed relationship with weight of responsibility. Venus on the composite Midheaven speaks of a relationship shown to the world with pride that may have artistic or aesthetic dimensions. Pluto on the composite ascendant signals a transformative and intense relationship that leaves a deep mark on both people.

When to use synastry and when to use the composite chart

Synastry is the best tool for understanding interpersonal dynamics: who attracts whom, what generates tension between the two, how they complement or clash. The composite chart is better for evaluating the destiny and purpose of the relationship as an entity: whether it has a foundation, whether it is oriented toward the long term, and what kind of structure it creates. In professional consultations both are read together: first synastry, then the composite, to have a complete picture of the bond.
