Chinese numerology and lucky numbers: the system that is not Pythagorean
Chinese numerology assigns meanings to numbers based on their sound in Mandarin, not their position in a mathematical sequence. The result is a system completely different from the Pythagorean one that many people are unaware of.
What Chinese numerology is and how it differs from Pythagorean
Pythagorean numerology assigns meanings to numbers based on their position in the 1-to-9 system and mathematical reduction. Chinese numerology, on the other hand, is based on phonetics: a number is lucky or unlucky based on its similarity in sound to words of good or bad omen in the Chinese language. Eight sounds like wealth. Four sounds like death. This logic is completely different and cannot be mixed with the Pythagorean system without distorting both.
Lucky numbers in Chinese culture
Eight is the most favorable number in China: its pronunciation is close to the word for wealth in Mandarin. Six is associated with flow and good results. Nine means longevity and eternity. These three form the core of auspicious numbers. This is why phone numbers, car plates, wedding dates and apartment floors featuring 8, 6 and 9 have greater demand and price in Chinese markets.
The number 4 in China: why it is avoided
Four is the most avoided number in China, Japan and parts of Korea because its pronunciation is close to the word for death in these languages. The phenomenon is called tetraphobia. Many buildings in Asia do not have a 4th floor, just as some Western buildings skip the 13th. From a Pythagorean numerology perspective, 4 is a number of stability and hard work. The two readings are incompatible: it depends on which system you use.
How Chinese numerology is applied to a name or business
In Chinese tradition, a name is chosen based on the stroke count of the characters, not a Western phonetic system. Each character has a number of strokes, and that sum should yield an auspicious number. For people using Latin letters, this system does not apply directly, but the logic of choosing favorable numbers for dates, addresses or business names can be adapted in an approximate way.

Pythagorean numerology works with the name in Latin script and the date of birth to reveal character, mission and life cycles. Chinese numerology is primarily predictive and sociocultural: it determines which dates, numbers and combinations are favorable for specific actions. They are different tools with different goals. Knowing both avoids confusion when they are mixed without criteria in online content.
Lucky numbers in feng shui: the Kua number
Within feng shui, there is a personal number called the Kua number that determines your favorable directions for sleeping, working or making decisions. It is calculated from the birth year and biological sex. It is not the same as the Pythagorean life path number or Chinese lucky numbers: it is a system unique to feng shui that combines numerology and spatial orientation.
